When joining a new company, you might think that everyone expects you to grow the product. “I’m gonna talk to customers, dive into the data, and totally crush it!”

This is very far from reality. Yes, you will be expected to solve problems. But most of those problems lie pretty far from the actual product. What’s more, the older and the more mature the company is, the less your job will revolve around product growth.

One of my acquaintances from Meta did an experiment. The team had a well-set-up strategy and a roadmap for 24 months. The execution was filled to the brim. They thought - why don’t we remove the product managers and let engineers run the show?

It went ok in the first quarter or so, but a year down the line - the impact numbers declined, execution slowed down, and misalignment with stakeholders reached its peak. What happened?

The organization is a living thing. Nothing happens in stasis. Each change triggers a dependency. The more of such dependencies are triggered, the more problems are created. Just people interacting with people. You need someone to tackle such problems on an ongoing basis. That someone is a product manager.

Or how my ex-manager has succinctly put it:

The blood of a product manager oils the gears of the organization, keeping everything in motion.

Where do you look for such problems? How to spot them fast? What are the effective ways to mitigate them? You’ll find all the answers below.

If you’re just starting our or already have an established presence in the company, this will have an x10 ROI for you. Guaranteed.
